GEOS 5143 - Applied Geology of Unconventional Reservoirs

3 (3-1)

Prerequisite(s): GEOS 4034 or GEOS 4534 or the approval of the instructor.

This course will focus on the geology of unconventional petroleum reservoirs.  The topics to be covered in lecture and lab include (1) the mineralogy of the unconventional reservoirs and the impact of mineralogy on productivity, (2) geology and sequence stratigraphy of the fine-grained mud-rich rocks, (3) the characterization of the reservoirs via mineralogical, petrophysical, geophysical (including microseismic methods), and geochemical approaches, (4) the importance of understanding the structural setting and mechanical properties of the reservoir rocks in developing efficient and cost-effective development, (5) significant aspects of the engineering/drilling methods used to develop these reservoirs, and (6) prediction of future petroleum production via “decline” type-curves.  Case histories of majors North American unconventional plays will be used to provide context throughout the course.  Students will complete a reservoir description and development plan, for a project based on real and synthetic data.
