Grades 7 - 12
Candidates seeking secondary teacher certification have two options both of which lead to Texas certification. Candidates may select a Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.E.) with a major in Secondary Education and tracks in English Language Arts and Reading, Social Studies, Mathematics, or Science or they may choose a B.A. or B.S. degree with majors in English, History with Interdisciplinary Social Studies, Mathematics, or Biology (Composite Science) with an associated teacher certification.
Professional Education for Secondary Certification. Coursework for secondary certification is similar whether the degree earned is through the West College of Education or one of the two other colleges. Candidates are required to apply to the teacher education program after completing 45 semester credit hours. Candidates then complete professional education courses prior to field based coursework, experiences, and finally clinical teaching in the last semester of the degree.
