The requirements for the degree of Master of Arts with a major in history are as follows:

Thesis Option - 30 semester hours
Thirty (30) semester hours of approved graduate History courses including Non-Thesis Option - 30 semester hours
This option is recommended for students who do not intend to pursue graduate studies beyond the M.A. level. This option is also recommended for the Five-Year BA/MA program. Thirty (30) semester hours of approved graduate History courses including * Students admitted to the Five Year MA/BA program (non-thesis) have the option to take 9 hours of graduate seminars with the approval of the graduate coordinator and/or chair.
Non-Thesis Option with an Outside Course Sequence Option - 30 semester hours
This option is recommended for students who do not intend to pursue graduate studies beyond the M.A. level and desire to establish credentials in an additional field. Thirty (30) semester hours of approved graduate courses including - Outside Sequence: 6 to 12 hours of approved graduate course work in a field outside of History.
Dual-Listed Courses - 12 hours
M.A. students may attempt a maximum of 12 hours of dual-listed courses. Research Requirement with Oral Defense
Both Non-Thesis and Thesis students must write and defend a final paper. Thesis students will write a paper of at least 60 pages based on original primary-source research. Non-Thesis students will write an article-length Exit Paper. Both papers should be the product of serious research and revision. Students in both tracks will complete an oral defense and submit an updated C.V. to the graduate coordinator at their defense. |
