GEOS 4644 - Paleoecology

Prerequisite(s): GEOS 1234   or permission of the instructor. 

This course will introduce upper-level and graduate earth and environmental science students to the field of paleoecology, with a focus on marine ecosystems. Lecture will cover a broad range of topics related to paleoecology including theory, quantitative methods, and application. The geological and ecological underpinnings of paleoecology will be discussed, including, but not limited to, proxies, age-dating, taphonomy, measuring diversity, species interactions, paleocommunity analysis and biogeography. The application of paleoecology, specifically in the context of modern climate change and conservation paleobiology, will also be explored in detail. Laboratory sessions will focus on methods for the analysis and presentation of paleoecological data using the program R.
