  • ART 2023 - Art and Identity: Land, Body, Nation in Chicanx Art

    3 (3-0)

This undergraduate seminar provides a comprehensive overview of Chicana/o art, and uses the historiography of Chicana/o art to frame this exploration.  Therefore, students will be introduced to the scholars who founded this specialization within the discipline of art history, as well as art historical methods used to interpret and write about these contemporary artworks.  Using a multi-disciplinary approach, we will consider how artists create, challenge, and support notions of identify in selected visual representations by contemporary Chicana and Chicano artists.  The course uses the concept of Azlan, in its initial construction as ancient indigenous homeland and its subsequent evolution since its reintroduction in the Chicana/o Movement manifesto El Plan Espiritual de Azlan in 1969, as the course’s central framework.  Students will view, analyze, and discuss images of Chicano/o art and assigned readings, supplemented by selections from video, literature, and music when appropriate.
